Liz.jpgSpace engineering is an engaging and challenging degree which encompasses subject matter from the aero, mech and electrical degrees as well as specialised space subjects. In first year you will find yourself covering a lot of the basics – well I guess you have to start somewhere but you do get the opportunity in subjects such as Space Enginering 1 to focus on your particular areas of interest. This subject requires the application of creative thinking, teamwork and research into a range of space related topics. Workshop Technology is also a good place to meet people and gain hands on insight into some of the processes and materials involved in engineering and manufacturing (you get to play around with the drills and stuff). Combined with a taste of digital systems,  programming, engineering mechanics and a bit of electrical engineering, space engineering covers quite a broad area of knowledge.

First year engineering however has more to offer than academia alone, it is the chance to form some great friendships, get to know a lot of people and have a great time. One of my best experiences at uni to date was definitely first year camp, it's hard to imagine packing so many memorable and some not so memorable moments into one weekend and the rest of the year just seemed to roll on from there. Overall I recommend that you take your degree seriously but maintain a good balance between study, leisure time and a healthy social life.

Enjoy, watch out for Matlab, have fun, and who knows we may just have a budding astronaut amongst us.
